Kū i ka Māna Program
Kū i ka Māna is a culturally grounded mentoring and empowerment program of Hale ʻŌpio Kauaʻi, designed to uplift youth, strengthen families, and inspire community connection through meaningful relationships, values-based learning, and cultural practice.
The name Kū i ka Māna translates to “to be like the one from whom you have learned,” symbolizing the powerful transmission of knowledge, values, and strength from mentors, caregivers, and community leaders to the next generation. Rooted in Hawaiian cultural wisdom and modern youth development strategies, this program nurtures the whole ‘ohana and the broader community alongside each youth participant.
Program Focus Areas
Kū i ka Māna supports youth, families, and communities through:
- One-to-one mentoring that fosters trust, confidence, and resilience
- Family strengthening activities that promote healing, communication, and shared growth
- Cultural learning and identity building rooted in Hawaiian values and traditions
- Life skills development to prepare youth for success in school, work, and beyond
- Community empowerment through service projects and leadership opportunities that encourage civic responsibility and connection to place
Who We Serve
The program serves youth ages 12–18 on the island of Kauaʻi who may benefit from mentorship, cultural grounding, and wraparound family support. Referrals may come from families, schools, social service providers, or the youth themselves.
How It Strengthens Families
Kū i ka Māna recognizes that youth thrive when their families are supported. Through group workshops, shared cultural activities, and parenting resources, the program strengthens the bonds between youth and their caregivers—restoring trust, encouraging communication, and promoting generational healing.
How It Empowers Communities
Kū i ka Māna invests in the community by nurturing youth who are proud of their identity, equipped with leadership skills, and committed to giving back. Participants engage in community service projects and cultural restoration activities, helping them develop a deep connection to Kauaʻi and a sense of kuleana (responsibility) to their communities.
Program Goals
- Build youth resilience, confidence, and identity
- Support healthy family relationships and communication
- Increase cultural pride and life direction
- Cultivate youth leaders who contribute to their community’s well-being
