A slimey spring break

WAILUA — Taylor Carvalho said you need to get your hands dirty during the ‘Ohana Fun Day and Prevention Awareness.

Nakili Domenden silently agreed, sliming her hands in the process of creating a non-toxic slime on Tuesday. She quickly cleaned up her slimed hands only to repeat the process with another batch.

The slime station was just one activity at the week-long schedule of free youth empowerment classes and programs presented by Hale Opio and a host of community partners at the Lydgate Park main pavilion.

“Monday, we had suicide prevention awareness,” Val Faford said. “Wednesday, following the ‘Ohana Fun Day where we have the nightending with a Glow and Dance for middle and high school students, we will talk about Teen Dating Violence prevention at the Lihue Public Library.”

Thursday activities centers around Girl Empowerment and will be moderated by Deslynn Jaquias at the Kukui Grove Center, where Boston Hair Design will be joining the group to provide hair cuts for girls.

“And of course, if Thursday is Girl Empowerment, Friday will be Boy Empowerment Day,” Faford said. “This week is all about empowering keiki while having fun.”

To wrap up the spring series of fun and youth celebration, Hale Opio and the Kauai Will Graham Celebration will be hosting a Celebrate Youth Kauai Sports Night on April 5 at the Kapaa Middle School covered play court area.
